Evidence for Anisotropic Motion of the Clouds in Broad-line Regions of Bl Lacertae Objects

چکیده
The masses of central massive black holes in BL Lac objects are estimated from their host galaxy absolute magnitude MR at R-band by using the empirical relation between absolute magnitude of host galaxy MR and black hole mass Mbh. Only a small fraction of BL Lac objects exhibit weak broad-line emission, and we derive the sizes of the broad-line regions (BLRs) in these BL Lac objects from the widths of their broad emission lines on the assumption of the clouds being virilized in BLRs. It is found that the sizes of the BLRs in these sources are usually 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than that expected by the empirical correlation RBLR −λLλ(3000Å) defined by a sample of Seyfert galaxies and quasars (McLure & Jarvis 2002). We discuss a variety of possibilities and suggest it may probably be attributed to anisotropic motion of the BLR clouds in these BL Lac objects. If the BLR geometry of these sources is disk-like, the viewing angles between the axis and the line of sight are in the range of ∼ 2 − 12, which is consistent with the unification schemes. Evidence for the Evolutionary Sequence of Blazars: Different Types of Accretion Flows in Bl Lac Objects
The limits on the mass of the black hole in 23 BL Lac objects are obtained from their luminosities of the broad emission line Hβ on the assumption that broad emission lines are emitted from clouds ionized by the radiation of the accretion disk surrounding a black hole. The distribution of line luminosity LHβ of all these BL Lac objects suggests a bimodal nature, although this cannot be statisti...
متن کاملHadronic Production of Tev Gamma Ray Flares from Blazars
We propose that TeV γ-ray emission from blazars is produced by collisions near the line of sight of high energy jet protons with gas targets (“clouds”) from the broad emission-line region (BLR). Intense TeV γ-ray flares (GRFs) are produced when BLR clouds cross the line of sight close to the black hole. The model reproduces the observed properties of the recently reported very short and intense...
متن کاملX–ray Observations of BL Lacertae During 1997 Outburst and its Association with Quasar-like Characteristics
This paper reports on the X–ray emission from BL Lacertae during its July 1997 outburst as observed with the Rossi X–ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), compares the RXTE data to previous measurements, and interprets the overall electromagnetic emission in the context of the currently popular theoretical models. The source is bright and variable, with the 2 – 10 keV flux approximately two to three and ...
متن کاملIs BL Lacertae an “orphan” AGN?*
Aims. We have analysed optical spectra of BL Lacertae, the prototype of its blazar subclass, to verify the broad Hα emission line detected more than a decade ago and its possible flux variation. We used the spectroscopic information to investigate the question of the BL Lacertae parent population. Methods. Lowand high-resolution optical spectra of BL Lacertae were acquired with the DOLORES spec...
متن کاملOn the Nature of BL Lac Objects
The BL Lacertae objects, or BL Lacs, have multi-wavelength continua dominated by non-thermal emission from a relativistic jet, and are characterised by a lack of optical emission lines. We find, through observations and modelling that the dominant factor in a source being called a BL Lac is the intrinsic lack of flux from the broad-line region – likely connected with a weak accretion disc – rat...
